One of the most common issues clients bring to me is anxiety. Anxiety can interfere with work, school, relationships and even activities as routine as going to bed at a reasonable time. Psychotherapy sessions can help people manage or lower symptoms associated with anxiety in a relatively short time, allowing them to resume regular activities and regain a sense of control in their lives.
Often, a sense of confusion about the root of the anxiety is a big part of it for clients – they know they feel worried, nervous, stressed, etc, but are not sure about the specific cause of their anxiety in their daily life. Sometimes there is a mental red herring of sorts, where there is a perceived root cause such as a troublesome boss or other person in their lives, but that person is really just transferring (for example) residual unhealed anger from another part of their lives altogether. After attending regular therapy sessions for a relatively short time, many people are able to pinpoint the true source and then we can really begin to work through those deeper, initially hidden, issues together.
